Helllloooo everyone,

I've decided to participate in this year's Tomie de Paola Illustration competition by SCBWI.

Here is the quote we needed to base our illustration off of:

Well, hello! I've been great, what about you? After coming back from the conference, I finally dealt with the rest of my life like cleaning, planning my next steps, some promotional work, SLEEPING and meet with some patient and wonderful friends...........and of course....doodled :)

I rediscovered the love for using markers! so much fun!

Thats it for now, to be honest....I'm really just procrastinating on my next project.....at least i'm done with all the preliminary work, just gotta paint it! I'll post that up onces its done.

on other news: "Leo's Job" is at the printers right now! it should be done sometime next year. CAN'T WAIT

SCBWI 40th Annual Conference.

I just came back from the SCBWI 40th annual conference. And WOW! I must say.... it was an absolutely rewarding, exhausting and inspiring experience. Learned new information from industry professionals (like Martha Rago, the Creative Director from Harper Collins), heard electrifying speeches from great illustrators and authors (David Small, Gary Paulsen, Jerry Pinkney, Judy Bloom, Bruce Coville......just to name a few), meet some great people, and handed out more promotional materials that I can remember.......

Some information shared at the conference maybe quite basic, but the information and knowledge I've gained through this experience cannot be learned from anywhere but at the SCBWI conference! Also, the dummy book I made for "Leo's Job" got some great responses and I can't wait till it is officially published.

I'm really glad I went and great thanks to my conference buddies Ciaee, Lois and Arthur for sharing this experience with me, you've all have been great and supportive friends!!

Can't wait till next year :)

Finally! Finished project's dummy book and conference

I will be attending the SCBWI conference this weekend and I am super excited!! Been busy printing out promotional postcards, re-printing portfolios, but most of all finishing my book so I can make a dummy book before the conference!! And YES!! it's finally done!! My client and I are both really happy with the results. Big thanks to Lois for teaching me how to bind a book!! Scroll down, I took a few pictures! ;)

Long time no post?!

Hello peeps! yes, I am still alive. I'm sorry I haven't got around to post anything in a while. I've been extremely busy with work. For the past 3 months, i've been working everyday on a book called "Leo's Job", written by Darlene Conley, 10 more days to go before the final deadline! So far this has been one of the most exhausting yet rewarding experience, nothing like creating/planning the illustrations for a book from beginning to end. I guess thats why, despite all odds, I will love being a children's book illustrator! Hopefully once its done i'll be able to share some of it with you!

For now, I would like to share some great news! Last week, I found out that my piece in International Watermedia XVII show got a Honorable Mention! Here is the link to all of the results (scroll all the way to the end to see my piece):

Sneaky Santa

I did this piece as a Christmas Promo. The theme is "Holiday Lights". I didn't want to paint children caroling, nor did I want to paint the typical scene of a family/children in front of a light up Christmas tree or fireplace with dangling stockings. I was hesitant on most ideas until a friend (Thanks George) suggested a child turning on the lights on a Sneaky Santa! That idea immediately made me smile and feeling excited for the project. How can you not be smiling when painting the jolly fat Santa?

I can't tell you how much fun I had painting those 2! I don't think I have ever painted something so ugly and gross before, though surprising to say they are some of the funniest characters to paint! I think maybe it is because I'm not so afraid to mess up and let loose to just enjoy the process of painting. Might do more gross things soon. ;)

..so I have decided to send "business" and personal Christmas cards this year!! I'm pretty happy with this piece.The characters are the same 2 girls as the on

e with them staring at TV, playing dress up and pretending to be Indians and Cowgirls. Don't we all miss Christmas when its summer?

These next two pieces are a continuum of the "Tu-tu" piece I've created previously, I think they pretty much speak for themselves.

The hardest part when creating these two pieces was the part where I had to find the perfect references for both baby and dog, so that they will look consistent with the characters in "Tu-tu". And let me tell you, there are so many many different

looking English Bulldogs out there.

Since a got a bit of time on my hands, I'm going to let you guys see what a perfect little work station I have! (minis the distracting tv that todd is watching on the other side of the room and two adorable cats on the other end of my white table).

I work primarily in watercolor, there on the brown wooden table you see all of my watercolor brushes and supplies (now it is also cover with used cups and snacks).

On my mac, I usually lay out across the screen my color rough and all necessary reference.

so when you're ever wondering where I am, most 70% of the time I'm there.

I know how this looks.....I am not baby crazy.

But for some reason I'm just way better at drawing/painting children, hence choosing the career of a children's book illustrator.

BIG Thanks to MUTIA and her wonderful friends, letting me paint their babies! They sent me a couple pictures. So I chose the ones I liked best, and painted the babies in backgrounds I found suitable (to their body gesture and lighting).

I did these paintings just to see if I can. And during which, I revisited the joy of just painting. I love illustrating, and as you can see I cannot stop adding illustrative elements here and there. But sometimes it is so fun to just paint with little or no planning! So there you go, hopefully one day I'll have a side career as a baby portrait painter ;)

I touched it up a bit and redid the background.

There goes another semester, I've learned a lot. Unfortunately, this is the only piece I want to put in my portfolio. hope you all like it!

(Most of my class assignments are not suitable for my portfolio, though I have developed a liking in painting children portraits. Thats maybe something to consider as a side job down the road.)

Anyways, I did this completely in acrylic, instead of watercolor. I wanted to see if I can do it. the colors can be more vibrant, but I wan't able use the lift of technique after the paint dries. The result is not very different in my opinion. but maybe one day, i can paint looser and faster in watercolor and fix things in acrylic?

I'm not sure yet, we'll see.......

looks just like watercolor in my opinion. Kazu keep suggesting me to invest in soft body acrylics, because the colors are more intense. I think i'm happy with watered down heavy body. it feels more consistent with my watercolor portfolio. Who knows, one day when i have $$ to spare and more time to play, I'll get a bunch of soft body acrylics. For now, I rather save some money........

Plein Air Watercolor Finals!!

I know it's been a while since I last posted....
I've just been exhausted trying to balance school, a part-time job and a children's book illustration gig.......which of course is under "confidentiality agreement".

Anyhoo, here are the two pieces I've been working on for my watercolor class:
(both about 14' by 20', watercolor)

this one literally drove me insane! I don't think I'll be doing something as "patterny" anytime soon. I referenced it from a picture I took from the SF zoo. I might touch up the moss at the back.

Got to say....one of my most proud piece yet....I had fun painting it too. If only i had nothing else to do but paint whenever I want...... the reference picture was taken at the farmer's market at the Ferry Building. I still have the tubal-wear and a box of peaches left to do....

I think this is the first time I handed in work "incomplete". The more I do watercolor, it seems the less i have a good estimation on how much time I spend on it.... Maybe I never painted something as complicated and as large as this....or maybe I'm just tired all the time....or my OCD is getting worse....

This is a double spread illustration for the children's book "Millions of Cats". I didn't know what to do for my "whatever you want" finals for Illustration 3, so I looked around online for children's books and came across this one and remembered I read once before when I was 6 years old! It was not hard to paint since the line did most of the job, but theres just so many cats!
anyways, I hid 8 kitty butts in there, try to find them all, they will make you giggle

so finally......I tried out the Jessie Willcox Smith method. I first drew it out in charcoal and established all the values. Using charcoal pencil can be a bit difficult to get into any details but it did create a nice texture on the wall. Then I sprayed layers of workable fixative. I was a little worried at first because when I was trying it out before I used hair spray, and with that I cannot lift out any watercolor paint. But to my relief, workable fixative allows me to lift out some mistakes. I really enjoyed this method, I think I'll definitely do this again.

and by the way, how cute are they in tutus?

The Sun Conure Beauty
This is the final of that class, we had a choice to use the animal we picked from the previous assignment and make it into a product/character, or to make a CD cover/book cover.
I kinda combined the 2. To fit the elements of the Sun Conure Parrot completely with my character, I gave her red hair, fur(feather) coat and purple stockings.

I also wanted to mimic the styles of Gustave Klimt and the way he incorporates gold, but personally I don't think I did that good of a job.

omg, this took waayyyyy too long, I think I spent about 25 hours on it! This of course counting in the couple of hours I screwed up and had to fix it.
"funny" story though, so on the day I had to turn it in, I decided to varnish it in the morning.
During the simple process, I accidentally dropped my picture reference into my palette. i didn't think much of it and just roughly wiped it off. But when I was finally done with everything, I used my picture reference to fan my painting, and a HUGE CHUNK OF BLUE PAINT landed right on my nose of the painting!!!!!!
I had to scrape the blue paint off, and repaint the nose :(
All and all, I'm happy with it, Tae suggested me to touch it up a little bit more. (on the left pinky) then maybe submit it to a contest or something.

African Portrait (watercolor)

This is my most proud piece that I've done in watercolor,
the assignment was to do a narrative portrait. I just happen to find the most beautiful picture of an African girl online couple weeks ago, and I decided to use her as my reference. (of course I changed quite a bit of her skin color to match my piece as well as created her jewelery and this entire environment from other picture references.)
But let me tell ya.....sunsets are so hard to do...I think I've spent about 8 hours on the background and only 5 on her face...
though I was really surprised how I can make the sky glow like that....

This is the first piece I've ever successfully accomplished. I remember playing with it when I was in high school. I hated it at that time, I simply didn't know how to use it. But I was surprised how fast I caught up to speed with just one assignment. I guess all I've learned from this school really paid off. The further understanding of color, the painting techniques from oil and gouache really helped me develop a good foundation.

This assignment was to develop a layout design for any store you desire. I got the idea of animals playing with the strings that could attach to the actual rope handle itself, hence a pet shop.
I used the salt technique for the background green and painted the animals with more red or violet depending on which the background color, green or yellow, it was against.

The assignment requirement was that to illustrate a indoor environment with narrative elements of your own desire in the medium of pen and ink. I ended up with this idea of a adorable and innocent child at home, who decided to go fishing with gummy worms. There is a little problem with the wall-paper pattern, but I don't think it effects the over-all composition too much, so I decided to leave it alone.

Now this one is to do a composite illustration of a good/bad dream/memory. I never remember much of my dreams... so instead, I portrayed my childhood memories of Australia. It was the first time (I was about 6 years old) I was exposed to western culture as well as the magic of nature. I absolutely loved those memories of how I started to flourish and run wild with imagination and adventures. (I did actually caught a bird once..hehe...)

Personally, this is my favorite. I illustrated a scene in the famous children's book, The Little Prince. I absolutely adored that book, and have kept many quotes from it. I know I can never even come close to the actual illustrations commissioned for that book, but it was fun anyhow. :)
(the actual illustrations are beautifully stylized and much more suitable for the actual story, since according to the narrator of the book: he cannot draw well)

This is an editorial illustration we had to do (hypothetically for the New Yorker). It is mix-media of gouache and color pencil.
I tried to poke fun of how the airlines are actually debating whether to charge over-weight people extra for their weight. It is a touchy issue since I can't even imagine how humiliating and insulting it is for these people. But at the same time unfair to those who need to pay extra for the weight of their luggage.

This was for the final assignment of this class. I chose to do the circus themed poster out of 2 other choices. I did it in oil. I got a good grade, but personally I'm not that happy with it.

This is the business card/logo I did for my American "dad", Dan.
He owns a landscaping business in Sonoma originally named "Danscapes"
During summer he informed me that he would like to change the name of his company and expand his business.
Unfortunately he did not match with his last graphic designer, and so ask me to give it a shot.
We finally reached a common ground after 6 or 7 tries.
My after thoughts were: graphic design is a whole nother world for me,
it was fun and i was glad Dan liked it, but illustration is definitely a much suitable major for me.

These 1st two are from the color and design class. It was my first encounter with gouache as well as had the complexity of color thrown at me. As most other student might have experienced, I was mind boggling! I did not even think about all these different elements tied in to playing with color. I am a lot more capable in apply these knowledge and skills now, but look at how bad i did with the mandala! I still liked the design, but the colors are aweful :(

Wine Bottle Label Design

This is a wine bottle label I did for Justin Sienna High School's Wine Auction of 2008.
My American "mother" Beth asked me to design an Italian Carnival themed label.
I did this digitally with Corel Painter X, and got 2 bottles in return ;)
